I Am Able Spotlight: Dan Watt

Everybody Dance: A Celebration of Inclusion and the Power of the Arts

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, a time to celebrate the lives and contributions of individuals with disabilities. This month, Prime Video is offering the heartwarming documentary, "Everybody Dance," for free. Directed by Dan Watt, the film follows the lives of five special needs children as they prepare for their annual dance recital at Ballet For All Kids.

Watt, a former dancer and choreographer who has worked with celebrities like Bea Arthur and Ben Vereen, decided to use his filmmaking experience to tell stories that explore the human experience, social issues, and the power of the arts. "Everybody Dance" is not just a documentary about a dance recital; it's a celebration of inclusion, perseverance, and the transformative power of dance.

The film follows the students and their families as they navigate the challenges and triumphs of everyday life. We see the dedication and passion of the dancers, the unwavering support of their families, and the expertise of their teacher, Miss Bonnie.

Miss Bonnie's philosophy is one of inclusion and acceptance. She avoids using labels like "normal" and instead creates a space where all students, regardless of their abilities, can feel welcome and valued.

As the dancers prepare for the recital, the film explores the themes of self-discovery, determination, and the importance of community. The film does not shy away from the challenges faced by the children, but ultimately, it is a message of hope and inspiration.

"Everybody Dance" is a must-watch for anyone who believes in the power of the arts and the importance of inclusion. It is a film that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

While filming, “Everyone Dance” Dan’s outlook completely changed and that’s what he hopes the film can do for others.

Dan was a producer on the award-winning film THE CENTER: Gibbons and Guardians featuring Jane Goodall. Dan has also produced Anika Larsen’s debut cd “SING ME TO SLEEP” and songs with Ben Vereen. Beginning his professional life as a dancer and choreographer, Dan went on to work with stars like Bea Arthur, Ben Vereen, Carol Channing, and Simon Cowell, as well as in film development at Columbia Pictures.

Dan is currently working on an “untitled documentary” with Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Daryl Roth and a doc-series chronicling all the great Women in Dance.
